Project Title
Investigating the risk of coronary heart disease
Acronym
EPIC Heart
The EPIC-Heart project is a large, pan-European initiative involving 23 EPIC centers across 10 European countries.
Project Aim: The project's main objective is to investigate the interplay of genetic, biochemical and lifestyle factors on the risk of coronary heart disease, which is the single leading cause of death in the UK and worldwide. Like InterAct (a 'sister project' based on diabetes), the EPIC-Heart project is based on more than 500,000 individuals who are part of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC). Over 10,000 of these people have now developed heart disease since they joined the study in the 1990's, providing a sufficiently large group of cases to allow reliable investigation of the joint effects of genes, biomarkers and lifestyles on heart disease risk.
